I vastly skepticism that any ingredient in Zanfel really “bonds” with the Uroshiol to remove it from your skin. The exfoliating bits simply scrub off the top layer of skin where the Uroshiol has soaked in.
I bought the CVS brand for only $20 and it’s right — the itch was gone immediately. It’s like you’ve given your rash a really excellent scratch without hurtful your skin like you can with your fingernails. Ingredients are the same as for Zanfel.
Since the products were side by side on the shelf, I read the instructions for Zanfel. That bit about “it won’t work if you don’t squeeze out at least one and a half inches,” I’m sure is their plot to get everyone to use up that itty bitty tube really quickly and come back to buy more. I used only enough as needed to scrub each area and it worked just fine.
I got my rash by removing a large vine from a tree that I didn’t recognize as poison ivy! So I have small spots of PI all over me. Trust me: just use enough to cover each rashy spot and you’ll be fine. Ignore the self-serving directions from the greed merchants at Zanfel.
For persons in a pinch, flat broke or without access to a drugstore, I’d suggest making your own exfoliant with fine sand and Vaseline. Rub and rub and you will remove the top layer of skin and give yourself the same excellent scratch that the Zanfel/CVS products do.

Itch is gone while applying it. Noticeable healing the next-day.
I’ve used it half a dozen times over the past 2 years.
Make sure to follow the directions! Last time I used it, I tried to use less than it says to since I had a very small splotch of Ivy. It didn’t work. Next day I followed directions, worked perfectly.

This is a truly incredible and revolutionary product — take it from someone who gets poison ivy constantly, all year ’round! We have tons of it on our property and it’s impracticable to avoid. But if you use this scrub as soon as you learn the rash, it provides *instant* itch relief. After using it, I don’t even get the blistering or oozing you get with poison ivy. For especially terrible cases, you may have to use it a few times — but I only just ever have to. Follow directions carefully and use the exact amount recommended — scrub for 30 seconds; then rinse thoroughly. It chemically bonds to the urishiol oil that causes the rash and then you rinse it away. Once the itch is gone, the healing can start. This stuff is expensive, but worth every penny! Personally I can’t live without this.

I’ve lived my entire life without ever getting Poison Oak or Poison Ivy…until recently. Most of my life I lived in California, where Poison Oak is prevalent, yet I always somehow avoided it during years of camping, hiking, and mountain biking. I went to the East Coast 7 years ago and still went a long time without ever contracting Poison Ivy. That was until I bought a new house and was doing some weed pulling in my backyard. I neglected to identify the plant until it was too late. The Poison Ivy oil must have been on my skin for days before I recognized what it was. Around day 4 or 5 after contact, all the sudden, my contact areas started itching like crazy, got swollen, red, rashy, blistery…especially on my leg and arm.
I tried Caladryl to cool the itching, but it just got worse. According to the Zanfel instruction booklet, Poison Ivy peaks at around 7-8 days after initial contact. That’s where I was yesterday…it was terrible! So I researched Poison Ivy products and found Zanfel. I went to the pharmacy and paid ridiculous $$$ for one small tube of the stuff. The itching was so terrible I didn’t care what it cost. I went home immediately, followed the directions to a tee, and the itching stopped!!!
The next morning, the ares were still blistery and oozing a bit, but even my wife said they looked much surpass. Because they were starting to itch a bit again, I used more Zanfel during my morning shower and it stopped the itching immediately again!!! I then used alcohol swabs to disinfect the burst blisters, and then applied Caladryl and covered the ares with loose gauze to catch the oozing. I then suited up and went to work and haven’t had any itching or tribulations at all today!
According to the Zanfel booklet, my rash areas should subside in the next few days. I’m at Day 9 after contact; it takes 2 weeks for mild cases to heal. So while Zanfel may seem overpriced, I reckon they know they have a winner of a product on their hands, and that they can charge as much as they want for it. I would defintely use it again…but, the surpass option might be to avoid the Ivy in my backyard by killing it with Round-Up and pine straw.

I’ve been using Zanfel for years and although the price tag it just that, pricey, I find it’s worth it. I get poison oak regularly from my job. I have to take prednisone at times because it gets so terrible. If I use Zanfel at the initially time I notice the rash and continue to use it even a day or so after the rash is gone, it never blisters or itches rarely. If the oak is on my face forget it, Im using prednisone, otherwise I use the Zanfel.

Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy Scrub is the best thing you can use to preclude and treat the rash; and it’s much less expensive. You can get it at Walmart.
