Got it from Amazon before the baby was born. We needed it the very initially time to control our baby temperature on a Bilibed when the newborn was diagnosed with jaundice. The min temp we were told to keep was 97. Surprise – 97+-1 degree all the time, mostly 97.1 rectal. Baby despised the procedure. Under arms (you can use it that way per the manual – 96. It was about 11 pm, baby was crying, our thought was she is cold. Tried under arms on myself and got 95.9. Run to a local 24 hr store, got Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer (Amazon sells is as well) and can’t be more pleased. Baby doesn’t even notice I use that one. Vicks is going to trash.

While I’m not a parent myself, I bought this TWICE: one for a friend, and one for an acquaintance. Both are new expecting mothers (aged 17 and 22), and I did so since I know rectal temperatures are the most reliable. (Apparently you need to add 1 degree to temperatures given in the armpit for babies.)
My mother told me that back in the early ’80s, when I was a baby, she never used rectal thermometers, since they only had the ordinary long thermometer, and she was frightened she would insert it too far and hurt me. My mom saw this thermometer when it arrived, and was very impressed at the improvements since the ’80s.
The benefit of this thermometer is that it has a small AND bendable tip, so you can’t hurt the baby. It’s also digital, and gives a reading surrounded by 10 seconds. The package claims that it will give a “high temperature reading” when temperatures reach 99.9 degrees or above. I reckon that would be very helpful to parents, especially NEW parents.
Even though I’m not currently a parent, this had more positive reviews than any other current thermometer given orally, in the ear, or otherwise (i.e. under the armpit). I would probably buy this myself in the future when I have children, although I will wait for the response from my friend/acquaintance to choose for sure.

I have tried many children’s baby thermometers and found that non compare to the ease and accuracy of this thermometer. I like that it’s small! I know I am not putting it in to far! My 4 year ancient isn’t worried of it either, so that’s a plus

Even with a fussy, wiggling, miserable sick baby this was simple and felt safe to use. This is a fantastic thermometer. You ALWAYS need to get a rectal temperature for your baby. Don’t waste your time with anything else.

Don’t believe the hype about this low-cost useless thermometer. I bought this one so I would have a reliable accurate thermometer which would produce quick accurate consequences. What I got was two readings before it broke. It doesn’t always light up and now its stuck at 96.8. I removed and reinserted the battery and it is still broken. Also, there are no probe covers that will fit this product so you will have to continue to disinfect with alcohol. Nice gimmick- like product that DID NOT WORK when I had an emergency. In the end, I went to the grocery store at 10 at night to get one that worked when this one froze up.
