My initially and largest question is What makes a bedside alarm clock cost $200??? (if you believe the MSRP that is)or even $169.99 on special place forward at time of writing this review. And after testing this nice small gadget, that question still remains.
I’ve rated it 4 stars for build quality, and functionality, it works well, and does exactly what it says on the box.
One word of advice though, I have a very high bed (or deep mattress set) so my night stands are well below head height, importance I have to set the light to brighter than most people. A handy thing to remember when finding a place to set this down.
I can’t knock off stars because of price, but considering that for around the same price, you could get an internet radio alarm with iPod and CD, and probably a built in wireless printer (just kidding) it strikes me as an expensive “toy”.
Alarm clock manufacturers are always trying new ways to wake us up, and I have to say Philips seems to be ahead of the curve, and have our needs at heart with thoughts like this(and things like the recent Blu Lite equipment for model). Remember projection clocks, bright the digital wake up time on the ceiling? Baseball shaped ones that you could really throw against the wall to turn off? Fun, but then again most of them didn’t cost over about $20
It works well, but for the price I would to have liked another input for music, or a wireless internet gathering, I’m not a fan of the sound of a stream in succession, or the jungle to wake me up I’m worried.
Bottom line, if you can afford one, go for it, I suspect like most people with $169.99 to spend, this will be well down on the list of priorities.

I was considering buying this product to replace a defective sunrise (dawn) simulator that I have loved using. I was attracted by its energy efficient bulb, in contrast to the incandescent bulb that my prior unit used. But, on reviewing the product user manual, I found the following entry in the troubleshooting section:
Problem: The appliance functions properly, but the lamp does not work anymore.
Solution: Perhaps the lamp has reached the end of its life. The lamp has
an expected life of more than 10,000 hours (more than 7 years of
normal use). The life depends on the use of the appliance. In case of
heavy use, the lamp may not last as long as you expect. The lamp is not
replaceable. If the lamp breaks down, contact the Philips Consumer
Care Centre in your people.
The fact that the lamp is not replaceable is not told in the promotional material. I chose not to buy the unit.

I am a very pleased title-holder and a regular user of Philips goLITE. I plotting that the Wake-up Light would be a perfect supplement of light therapy in the morning.
I am disappointed. The highest brightness level of the Wake-up Light is nowhere near comparable with the goLITE. I am a heavy sleeper and the Wake-up Light does not manage to wake me and the light does not make feel any more awake than usual, when I do. Which I be with you perfectly, as how could I benefit from its light with my eyes closed.
All in all I reckon it is a very expensive alarm clock. Persons looking for a cure of winter blues should certainly consider a goLITE instead.

With ancient alarm clocks I would be jolted awake, in shock from the loud, quick and blaring beeps, and it would literally make my chest hurt. This lovely product starts off very quietly, getting abstractedly louder every 5 or so seconds until it reaches the volume you choose. My husband and I like the wind chimes. I don’t really use the light in the morning, which you can pick whether you want to use it or not, as the window in front of me lets in enough light. I can imagine someone who wakes up before dawn could utilize this with fantastic consequences. On days I need to get up really early I look forward to using the light option. One thing I wish was different was when you use this to go to sleep, I wish the light would gradually dim every couple minutes or so, but instead it stays at the brightness you set it at and shuts off after the 15, 30, 45 minutes you picked. Also, I wish this had a “deluge” or “waterfall” sound to pick from. I like how you can use the radio as an alarm as well. Overall, I’m pleased with this product and I won’t be going back to the ancient alarms.

The Philips Wake-up Light is part of Philips’ line of light therapy devices for adaptable our body’s natural circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is the biochemical processes that take place in your body to regulate your sleep/wake cycles and mood. Your body uses *light* as a cue for maintaining these processes.
I own several of these Philips light therapy devices, namely, the GoLITE P1, the goLITE M2, and the goLITE Light (the initially two devices were formerly made by Apollo, which is now bought by Philips). These are Philips’ line of BLU light devices.
The principle behind a Wake-up Light
————————————
A Wake-up Light gradually increases the intensity of the light to simulate the light from the rising sun upon the break of dawn. The gradual increase in light helps to gently rouse your body from slumber to wakefulness. A Wake-up Light thus prevents you from being subjected to a sudden influx of light, which can be jarring on your circadian rhythm. The result is you wake up more refreshed and energetic. That’s how the Wake-up Light works — well, at least in principle.
I can vouch for the effectiveness of the BLU light therapy devices that are geared specifically for adaptable your circadian rhythm and mood. They work wonders for me. As for the Wake-up Light, I’ve been using the it every day for a couple of weeks now. But I can’t honestly say that the Philips Wake-up Light helps me to wake up more refreshed and energetic. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work; I’m just haven’t noticed an appreciable effect thus far. At any rate, I really like the thought of a Wake-up Light. Waking up to a gradually brightening light source is preferable to being jarred awake by a flood of light any day!
Here some highlights of the Wake-up light to help you learn more about it:
- Bright
At maximum intensity, the light is about as bright as a 100 Watt light bulb. To be precise, the maximum brightness is rated at 300 Lux (Lux is the unit of measure for brightness).
- Sizable Footprint
The Wake-Up Light has a sizable footprint. Its dimensions are 7-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ x 9-1/4″ (L x W x H) at its widest points.
- Different Wake-up Sounds To Choose From
Wake up to a chime, an FM Radio, or the sound of birds chirping.
- Adjustable Brightness
The maximum intensity can be adjusted.
- Extremely Intuitive Controls
I’m very impressed by how intuitive the controls are. I didn’t even have to read the manual to figure out how to set it up.
NOTE:
For iPod owners, you might want to consider an alternative model that includes an iPod dock – the Philips HF3490 Wake-up Light with Dock for iPod.
The major “con” of the Philips Wake-up Light is that it is not user-serviceable – the lamp cannot be replaced by the user. If it blows, you’d surpass hope it’s still covered by the warranty!
—
The high price of the Philips Wake-up Light and the fact that the lamp cannot be replaced are my largest gripes (-1 Star). Still, the device has worked reliably for me thus far. It’s simple to operate and the controls are very intuitive. Certainly qualities some significance.
