Years ago I bought the Model 1288 and returned it because some of the sounds were obviously “loops” and instead of relaxing me to sleep, they kept me awake because my mind locked on to the repetitiveness. This version, the 1288A, uses digital synthesis to make the sounds and is surpass. The sound are realistic. The speaker is abstractedly smaller than the one in the original but sounds just as excellent. A bit more low-frequency response would be nice, but it’s still honestly authentic-sounding. I have noticed that the “rain” sound still is in the form of a “loop” but it’s much less obtrusive and still helps me sleep. I suspect the other sounds are the same way but I haven’t detected it yet.
Where this unit really shines is when using the output jack to another device. The outputted frequency response is honestly wide-range and stereo. I’ve plugged this into my multichannel system and when using the 5-channel stereo mode with the lights off it feels like I am outside during a rainstorm or at the beach.
This is a excellent product for anyone who likes to relax or sleep to natural sounds.

This Product works even in San Francisco the world’s nosiest city. Between modified mufflers, street people, loud mouthed drunks and and 4AM garbage trucks this machine drowns out all of the cities charming noises. Thank you.

Haven’t slept this well in a long time. I use the colorless noise feature and it truly does block out the additional noises of life, while I try to sleep.

I am an extremely light sleeper and have tried the regular Sound Screen/Sleep Mate model. But this model (Marpac 1288A) can be cranked up to cover just about all, from noisy apartment neighbors to restless cats yowling at your bedroom door. It can also provide calming social class nature sounds for the daytime. I sleep like a rock with it and take it with me on trips. It is a bit bulky but very light. If you are not interested in the overlay sound feature (birds chirping and frogs etc), try the cheaper model DS-600A.
