I bought this thermometer after my ancient low-cost-o CVS one finally bit the dust and I needed one to make sure I wasn’t getting an infection because I had just had an invasive medical procedure. As always, Amazon’s service was top-notch.
The thermometer is rubberized and has a bendable tip. It’s water-resistant, so it’s made to be submerged in water for a thorough cleaning – a certain plus. It also conveniently has a backlit show. The memory recall is a clean gathering as well.
HOWEVER, I noticed that this thermometer kept giving me suspiciously low readings. I would take my temperature initially thing in the morning to get a basal temperature, and it would say that I was 96.6 degrees. Later on the same day, when I should be at my temperature peak (which is nearly always 98.6 degrees for me), it would read somewhere in the 97 degree range. After a while, I just got fed up with it and went out and bought a Vicks SpeedRead Digital Thermometer V911 – 1 Ea at the local Rite Aid to see if I was going crazy or the Mabis thermometer was just really off. After taking readings together for a few days, I have all the evidence I need: the Mabis thermometer always reads a excellent 0.8-1.2 degrees lower than the Vick’s thermometer, which displays temperatures that “make sense.” This is unacceptable, but unfortunately I can’t return it because of the nature of the product. It will be going in the trash. Don’t make the same mistake I did – avoid this thermometer at all expenditure!
EDIT 4/3/2010:
I sent the thermometer back to Mabis healthcare under warranty because the readings were much more inaccurate than the given error rate of ±0.2°F as listed in the thermometer’s literature. I received a new replacement thermometer quickly (in 10 days) via UPS from Mabis, but it too has the same low reading problem that the original thermometer had. I commend Mabis on their exceptional consumer service, but I remain dissatisfied with the inaccuracy of the thermometer. The fact that both of the thermometers had low temperature readings tells me that this is likely a fundamental flaw with this type of thermometer and that it isn’t just a fluke.
Again, avoid this one at all expenditure!
