Boy, does this small pot of scrape-salve take me back! Always a staple of my parents’ medicine cabinet, this was the initially thing to get pulled outta its nook and applied to whatever minor cut, abrasion, or scrape that I suffered due to my clumsiness. It sure did sting like hell, that’s for sure. And it was kinda creepy to see the stuff go to work, as the more-infected areas of the cut became all colorless and a bit foamy up-looking, kinda like a head on a beer! But it must’ve worked pretty well, though-I never had a cut get infected after Bactine™ was applied to it.
But up your sleeve from the stinging part, I never particularly cared for the smell of Bactine®. Being a guy who wasn’t (and still isn’t) into eucalyptus-based salves and cold treatments– to this day I won’t even go near Vicks® products or Halls® lozenges if I catch a cold– Bactine®’s scent was nearly unbearable to me. And that odor would stick around for a while, too! Fantastic, now I’m gonna spend a few hours smelling like a koala’s next meal.
My rec: stick with Neosporin® (no odor, nearly no sting) or hydrogen peroxide (minimum odor, some sting). If you’re feeling really adventurous, but, go with rubbing alcohol.

Got a cut, scrape, or troublesome boo-boo of any description? This stuff still works as well as it did back in ‘ye past days when TV was still black and colorless and Nancy Drew was some serious fiction! And the best part is that it works just as well or surpass than than stuff selling for much, much more money.

Introduced in 1950, the year after I was born, BACTINE is one of persons venerable consumer products that, disparate chocolate Flavor Straws and X-Ray Spectacles, has withstood the test of time because it works so well. Its use is limited to superficial injuries (minor cuts, scrapes, burns) of the upper skin layer, but it’s surprisingly effective at diminishing pain and preventing infection. And one of its most attractive ancillary attributes is a clean, unique smell that I can’t quite place my fiddle with on – perhaps a combination of peppermint, eucalyptus and menthol. Indeed, just removing the cap from the pot in my medicine cabinet brings back all the cherished childhood memories of the cuts and scrapes I bought while dressed in my Superman attire. Trying to glide by jumping off the top of the front steps can be injurious.
Nowadays, I find the smell of the medicine so manly and appealing that I’m tempted to use it as an aftershave. One can’t go out dressed as Superman smelling like a sissy.

Viroxyn cold sore (lip) treatment (desribed as a near miracle cure) has the exact same effective ingrediant in the exact same proportion as Bactine. But Viroxyn expenditure an arm and a leg! AND…Bactine adds a pain reliever! So, when you feel a cold sore coming on, soak a cotton ball with Bactine (instead of Viroxyn )and virorously rub on and around your budding cold sore (don’t rub so hard as to break the skin). And don’t ingest any! Then let that Bactine do its work. Your pain should diminish and your lip sore should heal much quicker. And you didn’t have to pay over $15 for a one time dose of Viroxyn (a cotton ball’s worth). But, check your proof! Look up both Viroxyn and Bactine online and see for yourself! Also, you might want to augment your treatment with a zinc-based cold sore ointment too (I reckon Bactine may have an ointment like that).
